A seminar with Professor Susan Hogan

Drawing on Hogan's longstanding interests in the history of the arts and health, this talk will give a tour through the arts and psychiatry, starting with a focus on the therapeutic use of the arts in the nineteenth century. It will touch on the intersections between medical, psychiatric and gender history.

Susan Hogan is Professor of Arts and Health at the University of Derby and a Professorial Fellow at the Institute of Mental Health, University of Nottingham. She holds two higher degrees: a D.Litt. in Gender and Women’s Studies and a Ph.D. in Cultural History. Professor Hogan has research interests in the history of medicine. She has written extensively on the relationship between the arts & insanity, and the role of the arts in rehabilitation. She is also very interested in the treatment of women within psychiatry. Susan Hogan co-edits a new series, Global Health Humanities.
